Bihar - Jharkhand Programme
With a vision of bringing sustainable change in the community
mental health scenario, the programme in Bihar and Jharkhand
started in the year 2002 June with 25 implementing partners
in 16 districts. Out of 25 partners, 11 partners in
Jharkhand (Hazaribag, Ranchi, Saraikela-Kharsawan, Koderma,
Loherdaga, Garhwa, Palamu, Godda, Dumka districts) and 14
partners in Bihar (Nalanda, Nawada, Gaya, Patna, Bhojpur,
Chakai, Muzaffarpur districts). The programme now covers
2714 villages of 35 blocks of 16 districts in both the
states.

- All PLWMIs are followed up at their door step and counseled
- 5786 Individual files of PLWMIs being updated every month
- Computerized database software is developed and used for keeping record of all people living with mental illness
- Community is sensitized and destigmatized towards mental illness as it has started accepting people living with mental illness
- There is rise is self-identification of mental illness as people can identify the signs and symptoms by themselves
- Women will mental illness after getting stabilized have been reintegrated into their families or got married

- Community helping people living with mental illness to unite and form a pressure group called "Manashik Rog Sangharsh Samiti" from panchayat to state level
- RTI Act 2005 used to access information to do advocacy for implementation of DMHP (District Mental Health Programme) by state governments
- people living with mental illness after stabilized taking the role of volunteers under the programme
- With regular advocacy efforts, Government of Jharkhand is conducting four outreach camps at four different places in the state, every month
- Government of Jharkhand now providing mental health services at three district head quarters through DMHP
- Government of Bihar is now providing mental health services (OPD services only) though the only mental hospital
